Abstract

751,389. Rotary printing-machines; inking apparatus. WRIGLEY, jun. CO., W. March 5, 1954 [March 30, 1953], No. 6463/54. Class 100 (2). The drive for a rotary printing-machine for printing on packages is derived from the movement of the packages through the machine. The packages 12 are impelled along a shoot 13 by a wrapping machine so that every other package contacts a tooth 50 on a wheel 49. Two wheels 49 are provided mounted on a shaft 41, and projecting through slots 52 on shoot 13, spring-biased guides 54 being provided for maintaining the packages in side by side relationship during their passage over the toothed wheels. Mounted on the shaft 41 is a, sprocket wheel 37 which, through a chain 36, drives a sprocket wheel 35 on a shaft 32 at each end of which is mounted a bevel gear 38. The gears 33 mesh with bevel gears 38 on the ends of upstanding shafts 21<SP>1</SP> rotatably mounted on castings 25 adjustably mounted on a plate 27 by screws 28 so that the spacing of printing rolls 19, mounted on the shafts 21<SP>1</SP> may be varied. The packages are printed upon by raised characters 17 formed on rubber bands 18 mounted on the rolls 19, relative slipping between the bands 18 and rolls 19 being prevented by pins 20. The rolls 19 are provided with apertured knobs 20<SP>1</SP> by which they are mounted on the shaft 21<SP>1</SP> from which they are driven by keys 22<SP>1</SP>. The rolls 19 are provided with upper and lower serrated edges 21, 22 for holding the packages against slipping during printing. The proper positioning of the toothed wheel 49 when the machine is started is ensured by a square cam 84 mounted on the shaft 32 and co-operating with a spring 88 attached to the casting 25. Ink is supplied to the rolls 19 by soft inking rolls 65 rotatably mounted on pins 66 on arms 67. The arms 67 are adapted to swing about a fixed pin 68. The rolls 65 are each resiliently held against the characters 17 by a spring 70 one end of which is anchored in arm 67 and the other end in a collar 72 adjustably mounted on pin 68 so that pressure of the rolls 65 against the rolls 19 may be varied. Pin 68 also constitutes the support for a transfer roll 75 in contact with the roll 65 and fed with ink by a wick 76 passing through an opening 77 in a bar 78 fixed to the casting 25, the other end of the wick resting in a reservoir 81. A set screw 79 is arranged to constrict the opening 77 to regulate the amount of ink passing along the wick.
