Abstract

28,203. Smith, W. H., and Wright, C. J. Oct. 14, [Convention date]. Delivery apparatus.- Sheets are delivered from printing and like presses by grippers or other sheet-holding devices on a constantlymoving carrier, the arrangement being such that the grippers have a varying motion and travel faster while taking the sheet than when depositing it on a delivery board, which is so constructed that it can be adjusted longitudinally during the normal working of the machine. As shown the sheets are taken from an impression cylinder 2 by grippers 13 which are ,mounted on frames 16 carried by two sprocket chains 6 passing over sprocket-wheels 5 on a shaft 3 driven by gears 4', 4 from the impression cylinder 2, the wheels 5 being of smaller diameter than the gear 4 so that the chains 6 move at a slower peripheral speed than the impression cylinder. The grippers 13 are controlled by springs which normally keep them pressed against collars 14 on a rod 15 mounted in the frames 16. As the grippers approach the impression cylinder 2, an adjustable cam 19 acts on a roll on an arm 18 on shaft 12 and opens the grippers to take the sheet. The construction of the frames 16 is such that the grippers move at the same speed as the impression cylinder while the portions of the chains 6 carrying the frames pass over the wheels 5, but the grippers are then slowed down to the speed of the chains, and so are travelling slowly, when the sheets are delivered. An adjustable cam 20 opens the grippers for delivery and strippers 30 detach the sheets from the chains on to a delivery board 11. This board is supported by the frame 1 and by a rod 43. By rotation of this rod 43, an arm 46 and link 47 adjust the position of the board 11 longitudinally. The rod 43 is fitted with a handle 45 which can be held in the required position by a nut 50 which engages an arcual slot 51. The shaft 3 is fitted with a notched disk 35, Fig. 4, fitted with a notched plate 36 which receives rollers on frames mounted on the gripper shafts and prevents vibration during the receiving of sheets by the grippers. The notches of the plate 36 are on the pitch-line of the wheels 5. The shaft 3 is also fitted with disks which are of the same diameter as the impression cylinder and support the sheets while being carried around the shaft 3.
