To all whom it may concern:
Be it knpwn that I, JOHN L. DEL None, a
- citizen of the United States, residing in the -within the sheet to be bronze city and county of San Francisco and. State of Cahforma, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bronzing-Machines, of
which the following is a specification.
Myunvention relates to improvements in bronzmg machines wherein an impression cylinder operates in conjunction with a distributing cylinder to carry a minimum amount of bronzing powder to a sized sheet; and consists in the details of construction and arrangement hereinafter described'and set forth in the specifications and claims, and
the objects of myv invention are First, to provide an improved, efficient and simplified bronzing machine; I
Second, to provide improved adjustable means for regulating the amount of bronze conveyed to the impression cylinder; Third, to provide improved means for adusting the path of bronze conveyed to the wldth of the sized portion of the sheet to be bronzed; Fourth, to provide improved means for removing and collecting the free or unim-. pressed bronze; and Fifth, to provide an improved gripper operating mechanism adapted to operate the gripping means from makin indentations I accomplish these several objects by I means of the device disclosed in the drawings forming apart of the present specification wherein like characters ofreference are used to designate similar parts throughout the said specifications agd drawings, and'in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved machine with the cover plate removed therefrom;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the body portion of the machine disclosing the various gear and driving connections;

Referring to the drawings the numeral 1 is used to designate a suitable frame or body within which is rotatably. mounted the usual platen 2 whose shaft 3 is provided at one end beyond the frame 1 with a' suitable gear 4.
An impression cylinder 6, covered with suitable material adapted to convey bronzing powder and the like, is provided with a shaft 7- whose ends are mounted within slidable bearings 8 to adjust the impression cylinder radially to the platen 2. One end of the shaft 7 is provided with a suitable gear 9 meshing with the gear 4 of the platen 2.
A bronze powder fountain 11 is mounted at one end of the frame 1 and is provided with a gage 12 consisting of lates 13 ad- I justed to the periphery of the ceding cylinder 14: by means of screws 16 to regulate and control the amount of bronze passing from the fountain 11 to said cylinder 14.
The cylinder 14 is mounted upon a shaft 17 having a gear 18 on the outer end thereof meshin with an idler gear 19 on a shaft 20, which idler in turn meshes with the gear 9 of the impression cylinder 6.
An adjustable distributing roller or c linder to'convey bronze powder from the eeding cylinder 14 to the impression cylinder 6 consists of a core 23. having a series of washers or bushing 24 thereon between which are interposed rings 26 of various widths whereby various combinations of diverse rings produce various widths to regulate the amount of bronze powder distributed. I
The core 23 is provided with a shaft 27 resting within slotted standards 28 whereby the action of gravity will retain a rolling contact between the rings 26 and the impressions and feeding cylinders 6 and 14 respectively.
The platen 2 is rotated by means of a pinion 31 on a driving shaft 32 upon the opposits end of which is a ear 33 mesh ng with a pinion 34 on a sha t 36 upon which is mounted a rotary brush 37.
The brush 37 being geared to the platen 2 mounted in bearings 35 slidable radially from the shaft 3 and the platen 2 in order that the contact of the rotating brush 37' relatively to said platen 2 may be adjusted .to remove the proper amount of unimpressed bronze powder from the sized sheet.
Sheets of sized paper to be bronzed are conveyed to the platen by means of a delivery device consisting of drapers 41 mounted upon rollers 42 on a shaft 4:3 and also on rollers 44- of a shaft 46 having a grooved pulley 47 driven by a belt 48 from a similar pulley 49 on the end of the shaft 17 of the feeding cylinder 14:. The belt 48 is twisted to reverse the direction of rotation of the drapers 41 so as to feed sheets of sized paper toward the platen 2.
The platen 2 is provided with grippers 52 mounted upon a shaft 53 whose ends extend beyond the sides of said platen 2, one of said ends being provided with a T 54 having a roller 56 on one end of said T.
The T 5 1 is operated by meansof a projecting trip 58 secured to the frame 1 and having an arcuate cam 59 on the underside thereof to engage the roller 56. As the platen 2 rotates in the direction indicated by the curved arrow in Fig. 3 of the drawings and the T 54 approaches the delivery drapers 41 the cam 59 first engages the roller 56 and thereby moves an arm 61 on the opposite end of the shaft 53 past a dead center in respect to the point of attachment of a spring 62 secured to one end of the platen 2 and the said arm 61. As the said arm 61 is moved past the dead center by means of the roller 56 and cam 59 said spring 62 brings the end of the T 54 against the end of the prqectmg trip 58 as disclosed in Fig. 6 of the drawings and thereby prevents the instant closing of the grippers 52.
As the platen 2 rotates the end ofthe 'l" 5% in engaging relation with the trip 58 is gradually released to gradually. close the grippers 52 onto the sized sheet not shown, thereby preventing the grippers 52 from producing indentations in the sized sheet which would otherwise be produced by a rapid closing of said grippers.
Releasing fingers 63 are mountedupon a shaft- 64 and arranged betweenthe rollers 44 of the drapers 4-1. The shaft 64: is pro- -vided at one end with a depending arm 66 operatively connected by means of a rod 67 to a bell crank lever 68 pivotally mounted upon the frame 1 as at 69 and having a roller 71 arranged to be operated by a cam 72 on the shaft 3 of the platen 2 to'move the fingers 63 to release a sheet upon the drapers 41 to permit said drapers 41 to feed said sheet to the grippers 52. A spring 73 is arranged to normally retain the bell crank lever 66 in a position that will retain the releasing fingers 63 in a position to intercept the sheet to be bronzed.
As the grippers 52 approach the delivery ends of the drapers 41 the cam 72 operates the fingers 63 to release the sheet and feed same onto the platen 2 to be engaged by the grippers 52 in the manner hereinbefore described.
Delivery rollers 76 are secured to a shaft 77 mounted in the ends ofbell crank levers 78 pivotally mounted as at 79 to the frame 1. .The rollers 76 are normally kept in contact with the lower portion of the periphery of the platen 2 by means of suitable springs 81.
An adjustable receiving table 83, having a retaining board-84, is pivotally mounted as at 86 and is provided with an arcuate arm or support 87 secured by a suitable thumb nut 88 whereby the angle of the table 83 may be adjusted.
A. hopper 91 is provided below the several cylinders and the rotary brush to collect freed bronze powder as it is removed from the sized sheet and a drawer 92 is provided in the lower end of said hopper 91 to contain the collected bronze.
The gripper arms 52 are operated to release said grippers when they approach the delivery rollers 76 by means of a cam plate 93 engaging the roller 56 to operate the T 54 and move the arm or lever 61 past a dead center to permit the spring 62 to retain the said grippers 52 in an open position until closed by the action of the projected trip 58.
A suitable cover plate 90 is arranged to cover the various cylinders, platen and fountainto prevent the bronze lIOIIl being distributed through the atmosphere.
Also to prevent other accumulation of dust from the atmosphere onto the various cylinders.
The operation is as follows:
The machine is moved adjacent to the printing or sizing machine which prints or sizes a design to be bronzed.
The distributing rings 26 of proper sizes are placed in position to provide and convey a path of bronzing powder slightly greater in width than the width of the design to be bronzed. This is accomplished by removing the distributing roller from the slotted tandards 28 and interposing the required rings 26 of various widths until the a gfegate' width of said rings is positione z y means of the bushings 24, to register with the design on the sheet to be bronzed.
A. gage plate 96 is slidably mounted upon one side of the frame 1 to re 'ster the sheet tributing rings 26.
As the machine rotates the cam 72 operates the releasing fingers 63 to release the sheet and the drapers 41 carry said sheet onto the platen 2 at the proper moment. The trip 58 operates the T 54 and grippers 52 to engage the edge of the sheet to be bronzed and carry said sheet around the platen 2.
The bronzing powder is carried from the fountain 11 by the feeding cylinder 14 and the distributing rings 26 carry sufficient powder from the cylinder 14 to the impression cylinder 6 by means of which cylinder 6 said powder is impressed onto the sized portion of the sheet only as said sheet passes between the platen 2 and said impression roller 6. s
After the sheet passes the impression cylinder 6 it encounters the rotary brush 37 which, rotating in an opposite direction, removes the unimpressed or free bronze from the sheet and defiects or carries said freed bronze into the hopper 91 and drawer -92 in the lower portion thereof.
As the grippers 52 clear the delivery rollers 76 the cam plate 93 engages the roller 56 on the T 54 and operates the grippers 52to release the sheetfrom the platen 2. The released sheet then drips onto the receiving table 83.
It is obvious from the foregoing that I have provided an improved bronzing machine of simple and effective design and one adapted to save unused bronze.
I am aware that the present state of the art discloses various types of bronzing machines for impressing bronze powder onto sized sheets. I therefore do not wish to claim such a combination broadly but Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is I l. The combination with a bronzing machine of a platen; means for delivering a sized sheet to the platen to be bronzed; a bronze fountain; a feeding cylinder within the fountain; an impression cylinder geared with and in contact with the platen; and an adjustable distributing roller in contact with the feeding and impression cylinders to adjust the path of bronze to the width of the sized portion of the sheet.
2. The combination with a bronzing machine of a platen; means for deliveringa sized sheet tothe platen to be bronzed; a bronze fountain; a feeding cylinder within the fountain; an impression cylinder geared with and in contact with the platen; an adjustable distributing roller in contact with the feeding and impression cylinders to adjust the path of bronze from the feeding and impression cylinders to the width of the sized portion of the sheet; and means for removing excess bronze from the sheet.
3.,The combination with a bronzing n1achine of a platen; means for delivering a. sized sheet to the platen to be bronzed'; a bronze fountain; a feeding cylinder within the fountain; an impression cylinder geared to and in contact with the platen; an adjustable distributing roller in contact with the feeding and impression cylinders to adjust the path of bronze from the feeding and impression cylinders to the width of the sized portion of the sheet; means for removing excew bronze from and means for collectingthe excess bronze.
4. The combination with a bronzing machine of a platen; means for delivering a sized sheet to the platen; a bronze fountain; a feeding cylinder within the fountain; an impression cylinder geared to the platen and adjustable radially thereto; an adjustable distributing cylinder in rolling contact with the impression and feeding cylinders to convey a path of bronze equal to the width of the sizing on the sheet; and a rotary brush to remove free bronze from the sheet.
5. The combination with a bronzing machine of a platen; means for delivering a sized sheet to the platen; a bronze fountain; a feeding cylinder within the fountain; an impression cylinder geared to the platen and adjustable radially thereto; an. adjustable distributing cylinder in rolling contact with the impression and feeding cylinders to convey a path of bronze equal to the width of the sizing on the sheet; and a rotary brush to remove free bronze from the sheet; a suitable hopper to gather the re moved bronze, and a drawer in the lower end of the hopper to collect the freed bronze.

The combination with a bronzing machine of a platen; means for delivering a sized sheet to the platen; a bronze fountain; a feeding cylinder within the fountain; an impression cylinder geared to the platen and adjustable radially thereto; an adjustable distributing cylinder in rolling contact with the impression and feeding cylinders to convey a path of bronze equal to the width of the sizing on the sheet; and a rotary brush to remove free bronze from the sheet; a suitable hopper to gather the removed bronze, and a drawer in the lower end of the hopper to collect the freed bronze; suitable grippers secured to the platen to secure the sized sheet to said platen; means for operating the grippers to secure the sheet when delivered to said platen; and means for operating the grippers to release the sheet from the platen.

contact with the impression and feeding cylinders to convey a path of bronze equal to the width of the sizing on the sheet; and a rotary brush to remove free bronze from the sheet; a suitable hopper to gather the removed bronze, and a drawer in the lower end of the hopper to collect the freed bronze; suitable grippers secured to the platen to secure the sized sheet to said platen when delivered thereto by the delivering means 10 for operating the grippers gradually to secure the sheet; and means for operating the grippers to release the sheet from said platen.
