My invention relates to gluing machines, and relates more particularly to improved means adapted to be attached to or incorporated inl gluing machines of the type at present in common 5 use, whereby the glue or other adhesive may be applied. to predetermined areas of a sheet or web of paper or the like.
The device of my invention is particularly applicable to that type of machine which is used'for 10 applying adhesive to sheets of paper which are used for covering paper boxes, and it is intended for use where the adhesive is 4to be applied to a certain area only of the cover sheet, such for example as the marginal portions thereof. The 15 devices heretofore provided for this purpose have never proved entirely satisfactory.
The principal object of my invention is to provide simple and eiilcient means-for applying an 'adhesive such as glue or the like to predetermined areas of a sheet or web of paper or the like, which will operate in a more satisfactory manner than the devices heretofore used for such purpose.
The nature and characteristic features of my invention will be more readily understood from4 the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, in.' which: Y

It will. of course, be understood that the description and drawings hereincontained are illustrative merely, and that various modifications and changes may he made in the structure disclosed without departing from the yspirit of the invention, and that the device of the present invention is equally applicable to various other types of adhesive applying machines in which there are provided an adhesive applying roller and an adhesive feeding roller coacting therewith.
Referring to the drawings, I is the frame'y work of the gluing machine, which as hereinbefore pointed out may be of any preferred type. The machine as shown is provided with the usual roller II for applying the adhesive to the sheet, and a roller I2 for feeding theradhesive from the reservoir to the roller I I. The adhesive applying roller II is journaled in the framework I 0 of lthe machine, and the adhesive feeding roller I2 is journaled in blocks I3, which are slidabiy, mounted on the framework Iii.
The blocks I3 are positioned by means of the adjusting bolts I4, each of which carries at its outer end a hand wheel I for eifecting the adjustment. Each of the adjusting bolts I4 is also provided with a collar I6, and a coil spring I'L; 'mounted on the bolt I4, is interposed between said collar and a fixed portionof the framework Ill.
By means of the foregoing arrangement, the' adhesive feeding roller I2 may be brought to. the proper position with respect to the adhesive applying roller I I, with a. slight space between; said rollers, whereby only a thin lm of the adhesive will be applied to the roller II, v
The lower peripheral surface of the feeding roller I2 is submerged in the adhesive I 8 which is contained within the pan or reservoir I9, so that, as said roller I2 rotates, a film or layer of the adhesive willr be taken up on the surface thereof and carried to the adhesive applying roller II.
There is also arranged, in conjunction with the adhesive feeding roller I2, a stripper bar 20 which removes from the surface of the roller I2 any excess of the adhesive which may be taken up when said roller is rotated.
The machine is also provided with the usual sheet feeding rollers 2|, and also With a roller 22 enacting with the adhesive applying roller II, for guiding the sheet against said roller II as it is fed by the rollers 2|. The machine may also be provided with the usual stripper plates f 23 coacting with the adhesive applying roller II.
The conveying apron serves to take the sheet away after the adhesive has been applied thereto. The parts above described are old and well known in the art.
The device of my present invention comprises essentially a plate member 25, the'forward end of which may be shaped complementally to the surfaces of the adhesive applying roller II and.
the adhesive feeding roller I2. The forward marginal edge of said plate member 25 is preferably of a. thickness,` corresponding Vto the amount of separation between the rollers II land- I2.
The plate 25 is so mounted and actuated, as
hereinafter set forth, that the edge portion thereof will be inserted at the proper time between the adjacent portions of the rollers II and l2, to prevent any of the adhesive fromv passing therebetween, the plate member being retracted when it is desired to permit the adhesive to pass. The plate member 25 extends transversely across the machine, and is of a length corresponding to the desired Width of the uncoated portion of the sheet.
'Ihe preferred manner of mounting and actuating the plate member will now be set forth. 'Ihe outer portion ofl said plate member may .be secured'toA a'bar 26 which'extends transversely across the machine, being attached thereto by 25 means of a clamping bar 21 and bolts 28. The
bar 26 is provided at each end with an arm 29, which is journaled by means of a pin 30 in a bracket 3l. The brackets 3I are bolted to the sides of the machine.
30 On one side lof the machine, the arm 29. of the bar 26 is provided with an extension 32, to which one end of a rod 33 is journaled, bymeans of a pin 34. The other end of said rod 33 is threaded in one end of a turnbuckle sleeve 35.
35 The other end of the turnbuckle sleeve has threaded therein the end of a rod 36. The threads in the rods 33 and 36 are respectively right and left hand, and the turnbuckle sleeve 35 is complementally threaded for purposes of adjustment. Lock nuts 31 are mounted on .the rods 33 and 36, for maintaining the adjustment after the same is made.
The lowerv end of the rod 36 is connected to the extending end portion 38 of a member 39.
The member 39 is provided with a slot 4U, whereby it is slidably mounted on a block 4|, which blockis journaled on the projecting end portion 42 of the shaft 43.
The shaft 43 is connected to suitable mechanism (not shown) for causing the same to rotate in timed relationship with respect to the rotation of the various rollers used in the gluing machine for feeding the sheet and for applying the adhesive thereto.
The projecting end 42 of the shaft 43 also has mounted thereon two cam disks 44 and 45, the' cam disk 44 being xedly secured to said shaft, and the cam disk 45 being adjustably mounted thereon, a nut 46 being threaded on the end poro tion 42 of the shaft 43, for securing the cam disk 45 in its adjusted position.
The member 39 also carries rollers 41 and 48, these rollers being adapted to bear against the working surfaces of the cam disks 44 and 45,
respectively. A coil spring 49 is mounted inthe lower end of the slot 40 in the member 39, one l`end of said spring bearing against the inner portion of the member 39 at the lower end of said slot, and the other end thereof bearing against 0 me block 4| to cause the slotted member se, and the parts connected therewith, to be returned to their lowermost positions whenever the same are not raised by one or the other of the cam disks 44 and 45.
By making one of the cam disks adjustable, the time period during which the plate member 25 is inserted between the adhesive applying roller II and the adhesive feeding roller I2 may be varied to suit the\requirements of the work.
The operation of the device of my present invention, and the portions of the old machine shown in the drawings and hereinbefore described, may now-be explained. The sheets are individually removed from the pile, and fed between the sheet feeding rollers 2| by mechanism (fnot shown) which is well' known in the art. The sheet is carried forwardly and upwardly until it reaches the adhesive applying roller II, against which it is pressed by means of the roller 22. When the roller I I is rotated, the edge of the `sheet will encounter the stripper plates 23 and roller II, and by `said roller conveyed to the surface of the sheet which is fed thereto as hereinbefore set forth.
It should be understood that the adhesive feeding roller I2 is separated from the adhesive applying roller II a slight distance to permit a certain quantity. of the adhesive normally vto pass therebetween.' The proper thickness of the;
adhesive illm is regulated by'means of the bolt I4 and hand wheel I5, which are connected to the slidable blocks I3 in which the adhesive feeding roller I2 is journaled.
The operation of the device of my present invention will now be described as the same is employed for stenciling adhesive on a box cover sheet such as is shown in Fig. 6 of the drawings, in which the adhesive is applied only to the marginal edge portions of the sheet.
The plate member 25 provided is of a length corresponding to the desired width-of the uncoated portion of thersheet, so that when said plate is inserted between the rollers II and I2, to prevent the passage of the adhesive, the corresponding width of the adhesive applying roller II will be left uncoated, and when said uncoated portion of the adhesive applying roller I I reaches the sheet which is fed thereto, a corresponding portion of said sheet will be left uncoated. l
The foregoing takes care of the side margins 5I)y of'the sheet 5I, (see Fig. 6), it being understood that the adhesive will pass from the surface of the feeding roller I 2'to the surface of the applyy ing roller Il on such portions thereof as are located beyond the ends of the plate member 25.
In order to permit the end edge portions 52 of the sheet 5I to be coated, the plate member 25 is removed at the proper time from between the rollers II and I2. Whenever the plate member is so removed from between said rollers II and I2, the adhesive will be transferred from the roller I2 to the roller II over the entire width of the roller II, to be carried by thesame to the sheetI4 and applied thereto. Consequently, it is only necessary, whenever a certain area of the sheet is to be left uncoatedfto cause the plate member 25 to be inserted between the rollers I I and I2, and thereby prevent the adhesive from being transferred .from the roller I2 to that portion of the roller II which corresponds to the portion of the sheet which is to be left uncoated.
The plate member 25 is impelled to the position between the rollers II and I 2 by the spring 49,
5 located in the lower portion of the slot 4U in the member 39. When it is desired t0 remove the plate member 25 from between the rollers Il and i2. the periphery of the extending portion of the cam disk 85 will encounter the roller Il, pushing l0 the same upwardly, and this, through the intermediary of the rod 36, turnbuckle 35, and rod 33, will cause the arms 29 of the transverse bar 26 to be moved about the axis provided by the pin 30. When these arms 29 are thus moved, the transverse bar 2d will be retracted, carrying with it the plate member 25.
It will be noted that the peripheral surfaces of the extending portions of the cam disks 44 and 45 coincide, andhence, as the cam disks continue to 2d rotate, the extendingportion of the disk d will engage the roller 41, so that, when the extending portion of the cam disk 45 no longer engages its roller dt, the piate member 2B will be held in the retracted position by the extending portion oi the cam disk dd. As the cam disk 45 is adjustable about its axis on the extending portion 42 ofthe shaft dll, the time period during which the plate member 25 is held retracted from between the rollers l l and l2 may be Varied in accordance with 30 the requirements of the work.
It should, of course, be understood that the shaft d3, upon which the cam disks 44 and db are mounted, rotates in timed relationship with respect to the feed of the sheets through the ina-v chine, but as the adhesive applying machines at.
present in common use are usually provided with a shaft which operates in such timed relationship, it is not deemed necessary to illustrate the driving means employed.
It will be found that in the use of a device constructed in accordancev with the present invention, the stenciling of the sheets used for covering paper boxes andy the like will be more elciently and cleanly performed than has here- 45 tofore been possible.
I claim: *A
1. Ina machine for applying adhesive to a sheet or web, a roller for applying the adhesive to said sheet, a roller arranged in conjunction therewith for feeding adhesive thereto, a plate member insertable betweenl portions of said rollers for preventing the transfer of thev adhesive from the surface of thev feeding roller to a. portion of the surface of the applying roller, and an adiustable 55 cam structure for controlling said plate member whereby said plate member may be inserted and retracted at certain times.

In a machine for applying adhesive to a sheet or web, a roller for applying the adhesive to said sheet, a roller arranged in conjunction therewith for feeding adhesive thereto, a plate member insertable between portions of said rollers for preventing the transfer of the adhesive from the surface of the feeding roller to a portion of the surface of the applying roller, a movably mounted bar extending transversely across the machine for supporting said plate member, and an adjustable cam structure for controlling the movement of said bar.

In a machine for applying adhesive to a sheet or'web, a roller for applying the adhesive to said sheet, a roller arranged in conjunction therewith for feeding adhesive thereto, aplate member insertable between portions oi' said rollers for preventing the transfer of the adhesive from the surface of the feeding roller to a portion of the surface o? the applying roller, a movably mounted bar extending transversely across the machine for supporting said plate member, a cam structure for controlling the movement of said bar, and an adjustable connecting rod for actuating said bar interposed between said bar and said cam structure.
d. in a machine for applying adhesive to a sheet or web, a rollerforrapplying the adhesive to said sheet, a-roller arranged in conjunction therewith for feeding adhesive thereto, a plate said sheet, a roller arranged in conjunction theres with for feeding adhesive thereto, a plate mtember insertablebetween portions of said rollers for preventing the transfer of the adhesive from the surface of the feeding roller to a portion of the surface of the applying roller, a movably mounted bar extending transversely across the machine for supporting said plate member, an adjustable cam structure for controlling the movement of said bar, and an adjustable connecting rod for actuating said barfinterposed between said bar and said cam structure.
