Abstract
23,408. Clough, H. Oct. 16. Delivery apparatus.- Relates to machines in which the sheets, printed side up, are conveyed first towards the feed end and then in the opposite direction for deposition on a delivery board, and consists in providing in the second or reverse conveying-means a dropsheet tape-delivery carriage reciprocated by endless chains so as to obtain a frictionless acceptance and delivery of the sheets, and so arranged that sheets of various lengths can be delivered up tp the front edge of the delivery board. As applied to the wharfedale stop-cylinder bottom-feed machine described in Specification 13,606/04 in which the sheets are transferred from the impression cylinder by gripper fliers to tapes which convey them towards the feed end, tapes 40 passing round a lifting and lowering roll 47 then swinging upwards to take the sheets and convey them in the reverse direction for delivery by other tapes 41 to the board 33, a reciprocating carriage 25 carrying endless tapes and adjustably connected with the drive is arranged to receive the sheets from the tapes 41, carry them against hinged stops 34 at the end of the delivery board 33, and deliver them by the travel of the tapes as the carriage returns. The carriage is reciprocated between side guides 28 by links 23, 24 from endless chains 21, 22 driven at the same speed as the tapes 40, 41 from a shaft 14, which, after removal of a locking-catch 13, may be moved longitudinally to disengage the wheel 9 from the wheel 8 in the main drive and thereby enable the shaft to be rotated by a hand-wheel 12 to bring the front end of the carriage below the edge of a sheet leaving the tapes 41, reengagement of the wheels 8, 9 being then effected. The carriage tapes are stationary relatively to the carriage as it moves over the delivery board and are driven as it returns by a free-wheel clutch 26 on one of the tape spindles gearing with a fixed rack 27. The compound wheel 8 carried by the inking-mechanism frame 31 is driven by a chain 7 from the main shaft 3, and drives a compound wheel 42 from which the tapes 40, 41 are driven by a chain 43. The delivery board carries an adjustable fence 35, and is supported on a stay-bar 49 of the frame 31 and on a bar 50 across the side frames.
