750,959. Liquid boilers. SWANEY, R. C. Feb. 22, 1954 [Feb. 27, 1953], No. 5139/54. Classes 64(1) and 64(2). A heater for oil for an industrial heating system comprises a cylindrical shell 14 having end walls 30, 32 and containing a heating tube 16 or tubes extending from one end wall to the other, a flow pipe or pipes 54, 56 connected to an inlet in the shell at a point spaced from both end walls 30, 32 and a return pipe 68 opening into the shell through one end wall 32 half way round from the flow pipe inlet. The part of the return pipe 68 adjacent to the end wall 32 is parallel to the axis of the shell 14, so that the returning oil is directed towards the opposite end wall 30. The oil boiler shown has a single horizontal heating tube 16 which receives hot gases from an oil burner through an inlet 22. The flow pipes 54, 56 are connected to a header 52 at the top of the shell 14. Alternatively, a flow pipe extends through an end wall 32 to a point between the end walls. The bottom of the shell 14 is connected to the bottom of an expansion tank 12 by a pipe 42. Vent pipes 80, 82 extend from the boiler shell and header 52 to the tank 12. Drain pipes 74, 76 are connected to the tank 12 and pipe 42. In a modification, the outer shell has a vertical axis and a number of vertical fire tubes connect the end plates.
