A stacking machine, of the kind in which a pile of sheets, assisted by joggers, is built upon a pile support, the support being lowered as the pile is built up, is provided with a temporary receiver for holding sheets as they are received and where they will be subject to the action of the joggers while a completed pile is removed and a pile support is positioned to receive a new pile. The auxiliary receiver is supported on a cross-bar 20 supported on bearings in frames 18. Fixed to the cross-bar 20 are blocks 21 to which is attached a strip 22. Eight brackets 28 are secured to the strip 22 by plates 24 and wing- nuts 25. The brackets carry rollers and bearings 29, 30 by which rods 34 are slidably carried by the brackets. Each of the rods has an eye 35 threaded on a cross-tube 36. Secured to the ends of the tube 36 are toothed racks 38 which are slidable in grooves in brackets 32 attached to the shaft 20 and which mesh with pinions on a cross-shaft 41. During the normal operation of the device the bars 34 of the auxiliary receiver grid are in the position shown in Fig. 4. When the main pile 10 is completed the grid is swung into horizontal position by rotation of the shaft 20 and slid inwardly over the pile. Stop-plates 44, guide rollers 45 and adjustable stops 46 serve to ensure that the grid is inserted in the correct position. Front stops 16 are provided and the joggers 13, 14 act on the sheets when the temporary receiver is inserted, the joggers 13 being forked to fit over the rods 34. The three outer rods 34 are adjustable along the strip 22 and the joggers are adjustable for different sizes of sheets. The front stops 16 may also be adjustable. The auxiliary grid is supported in its inoperative position by stoppins 50 on the ends of the racks engaging the brackets 32.
