749,411. Typewriters &c. ROYAL McBEE CORPORATION, [formerly ROYAL TYPEWRITER CO., Inc]. April 13, 1954 [May 7, 1953], No. 10903/54. Class 100 (4). Letter-spacing driving mechanism; space-key actions.-In a power-operated typewriter or like machine the carriage escapement mechanism may be repeatedly operated by a rotary cam 31, which, through a follower 39, oscillates an actuator lever 40. The follower 39 and the actuator 40 form part of a compound member 37 normally axially displaced from the cam 31 but, on depression of a key 28, which, through a linkage 56, 54 and 51 pivots a shifting lever 45, the compound member is axially shifted to engage the follower 39 and cam with one another. The actuator 40 engages a lengthened horizontal bend of a lever 64 which, through a resilient connection, e.g. a spring 13, pivots an arm 66 of a bail to engage and turn a rocker plate 11 of the escapement mechanism. A lost-motion connection 79 permits a single operation of the escapement mechanism by a link 79A without interfering with the repeat operation mechanism. Keys.-The key 28 is formed from a single piece of metal bent to shape.
