Abstract

15,954. Excelsior-Fahrrad-Werke Geb. Conrad & Patz Akt.-Ges. Jan. 29, [Convention date]. Relay actions; keyboard operators.-Driving- mechanism of the character described below is arranged underneath the key-levers of a typewriter, the mechanism being either built into the typewriter or carried by a separate base provided with an auxiliary keyboard. (1) In the arrangement shown in Fig. 5, the key-levers 1 are connected by links 16 to levers 14 carried by depending parts of the intermediate levers 4 of the action. On depression of a key-lever, the rear end of the lever 14 is raised into the path of a tappet 13 on a motor-driven shaft 12, the lever 14 being then m o v e d longitudinally and operating the lever 4 and the connected type-lever. To prevent repeated impressions from occurring when a key - lever is held depressed, the key-levers are connected by links 28 to latches 26 which, on depression of the key-levers, are raised and catch the ends 30 of the levers 14 at the end of the forward movement. To cause the ends 30 to snap on to the latches, the links 28 are in two parts separated by springs 29. To permit repeated impressions to be made for interlining &c., the latches can be rendered inoperative by turning upwards a stop 31 secured to a shaft 30. (2) In the arrangement shown in Fig. 4, the driving-mechanism is carried by a separate base 17 and consists of a series of bell-cranks 22, which are pivoted on a crankpin on the motor-driven shaft 23 and have pin- and-slot connexions 20 with the key-levers 18 of the auxiliary keyboard. On depression of one of these key-levers, the path of the hooked end 22 of the associated bell-crank is shifted and the hooked end engages a lug 24 on one of the key-levers 1 in the main keyboard. (3) In the arrangement shown in Fig. 6, the auxiliary keylevers 18 rock levers 37 which have pin-and-slot connexions 34 with links 33 on the main keylevers 1, lugs 45 on the links being thereby brought into the path of a tappet on the motordriven shaft 41. Each link carries a pivoted latch 43 adapted to prevent repeated impressions from occurring if the key-lever is held depressed, the latch being arranged to engage an arm 40 which is loose on the shaft 41 and is moved forward by a link 39. (4) In the arrangement shown in Fig. 7, the key-levers 1 carry pivoted friction-sectors 47 which are connected by links 49 to the intermediate levers 4. On depression of a key-lever, the sector engages a constantlyrotating roller 46, and is rotated in the direction shown. The rotation is arrested when the bottom edge of the sector engages the roller and repeated operation is thus prevented. The impression can be adjusted by altering the touch on the key-levers and also by adjusting the sectors, as for instance, by altering the length of the links 49. As applied to a machine having an auxiliary keyboard, the frictionsectors may be pivoted on the auxiliary keylevers and be connected by links to the main key-levers.
