To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, ANDREW W. STEIGER, a citizen of the United States, residing in Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Typewriting and Computing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to combined typewriting and computing machines, and is herein illustrated as applied to a machine of the Hanson-Underwood type, such as shown in the patent to Hart, No. 1,190,171, granted July 4, 1916, in which the numeral printing keys, while writing in a computing zone, position, through intermediate elements, individual indexing pins, one for each printed digit, and the digits thus indexed are carried into the dial wheels of the register. The invention relates more particularly to the devices interposed between the numeral keys and the pin-setting devices.
In machines of this type to each dial wheel of the register there corresponds an actuating bar having nine indexing pins. The typewriter carriage in its movement, through suitable connections, selects the denomination of the digit, that is, determines in which bar to operatively position an indexing pin, and consequently to determine which dial wheel of the register is to be given an amount of rotation corresponding to the digit printed. After the pin-bar of ,the proper denomination is operatively positioned, the pin corresponding to the digit printed is depressed by theproper one of the pin-depressing linkages, of which there is one to correspond to each of the numeral keys. Each of these linkages is capable of operatively positioning the corresponding pin on any one of the actuating bars, the proper bar being determined by the denominationselecting means. T o actuate each of these linkages, an arm is provided at the end of a rock-shaft, connected to actuate said linkage, and this arm is so positioned as to be in the path of a pendent link or pendant, attached to the corresponding numeral key. In a combined machine of this type, it is necessary to give a full stroke to the type-bar and also to the pin-depressing linkage corresponding thereto. pleted before the other a full stroke of the second may be prevented. Therefore, to obtain proper action of both the printing and computing mechanisms, it is necessary to adjust very accurately the position of the pendant-supporting clamp on the key-lever. it is evident that a fine adjustment of this kind is hard to obtain and maintain, and that frequent readjustment would necessarily follow.
This invention provides an actuating connection between each key-lever and the corresponding pin-setting linkage, such that no fine adjustment is necessary and that, at the same time, a better and more uniform result is obtained. is specifically illustrated, this invention provides a yielding device interposed between each key and its associated linkage in place of the customary rigid device. One feature of the invention consists in the provision of connections such that the operation of the indexing mechanism is completed before full depression of the key. A second feature of the invention consists in the provision of means to obviate interference of the computing mechanism with the printing operation. A third feature of the invention consists in the provision of means whereby interference with the carriage-feed by the computing mechanism is avoided.

In the form of the invention here shown, bracket or yoke 26 is provided with adjusting screws 28 and 29. Screw 29, however, does not on gage the key, but serves to regulate the tension of spring 30, so as to provide for actuation of the pin-setting linkages without substantial compression of said spring. Screw 28 determines the normal position of bracket or yoke 26.
Each pin-bar 2) is provided with nine pins 35 and carries a rack 31 which, through pinion 32 and a one-way clutch (not shown), actuates a dial wheel 33 and the setting of a pin 35 on any pin-bar 20 determines the amount of rotation of the corresponding dial wheel when the general operator 36 in its forward movement engages the depressed pin and advances the pin-bar. The register, besides dial wheels 33, includes carry-over devices 34:.
Tappets 15, jacks 16, rods 17, levers 18, and transposition device 19 constitute a denomination-selecting device, while pinsetting'linkages 21, shafts 22 and arms 23 constitute a number-indexing device.
In use, brackets 26 may be adjusted as in said Hart Patent N 0. 1,190,171, but preferably are so adjusted that the limit of movement of the pendent links is reached before the keys have completed their down strokes. This adjustment insures complete action of the pin-depressing linkages and at the same time by the interposition of spring 30 permits the depressed key to continue to descend, avoiding interference with the operation of the typewriter mechanism.
Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention, and portions of the improvements may be used without others.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a combined typewriting and computing machine, in combination, a type-bar,
type-bar-actuating means including a numeral key, a pendent link, a number-indexing mechanism including a rock-shaft and an arm carried by said rock-shaft in posi tion to be engaged by said pendent link, and connections between said numeral key and said pendent link, permitting completion of the stroke of said numeral key to effect printing by said type-bar after the downward movement of the pendent link has been stopped by said arm when the same has reached its limit of movement.
2. In a combined typewriting and computing machine, in combination, printing means including numeral keys, number-indexing means, and actuating mechanism for said. number-indexing means, including means for maintaining a fixed relation between a numeral key and the number-indexing means during the greater part of the down stroke of said numeral key, and permitting an idle movement of said numeral key with reference to said numberindexing means during the latter part of said down stroke.
3. In a computing machine, in combination, denomination-selecting means including numeral keys, number-indexing devices, and actuating means for said number-indexing devices, connected to said numeral keys and permitting idle movements of said numeral keys with reference to said numberindexing devices during the latter part of their down strokes.

5. In a combined typewriting and computing machine, in combination, printing mechanism, numeral keys, key-actuated devices for effecting printing at the end of the down stroke of a key, computing mechanism including number-indexing means, and devices interposed between the numeral keys and the number-indexing means to effect actuation of the number-indexing means and thereafter permit movement of the key to effect printing.
6. In a combined typewriting and computing machine, in combination, printing mechanism, number-indexing mechanism, and key-actuated means for effecting the operation of both the printing and numberindexing mechanisms including devices to ill) permit completion of the action of one of said mechanisms after the other is completed.
7 In a computing machine, in combination, denomination-selecting means including a traveling carriage, numeral keys, key-controlled carriage-feeding mechanism thrown into operation at the end of the down stroke of any of the numeral keys, number-indexing means, and key-actuated means for effecting the operation of said number-indexing means including devices for permitting further movement of a nu meral key in case of completion of the movement of the number-indexing means before completion of the down stroke of said key.
8. In a computing machine, in combination, number-indexing means and actuating means therefor including numeral keys, pendants supported by said keys and engaging said number-indexing means to control the same, and connections between each of said pendants and the corresponding numeral key to cause movement of the pendant with said key until the number-indexing action is completed and thereafter to permit idle movement between said numeral key and said pendant to allow full-stroke action of said key.
9. In a computing machine, in combination, com uting mechanism including keyactuated inkages, numeral keys, and devices interposed between said keys and said key-actuated linkages to cause said linkages normally to be moved as if 'rigidly linked to said keys, but to permit idle movements of said numeral keys with reference to said linkages in case movement of said key-actuated linkages is prevented.
10. In a computing machine, in combina tion, numeral keys, number-indexing means including digit-setting linkages, one for each numeral key, a rockshaft to operate each linkage, and an arm mounted on each rockshaft, a pendant for each of said numeral keys, positioned to engage one of said arms, and a connection between each of said pendants and the corresponding numeral key, comprisin a bracket pivotally supported on said key and means for adjusting said bracket on its pivotal support to determine the proper relation between the pendant and the arm on the corresponding rock -shaft, but yieldable to permit movement of said bracket and consequently of said key after the pendant has been blocked by the arm with which it engages.
11. In a combined typewriting and computing machine, in combination, printing mechanism including numeral keys, computing mechanism including a number-indexing device, key-supported pendants to actuate said number-indexing device, a bracket pivoted on each key and having pivotal connection with a pendant for supporting the same, and adjusting means to move said bracket about its pivot to raise or lower the pendant, the said adjusting means having yielding means to hold the pendant in its lower position with reference to the key, but to permit further depression of the key when the pendant has reached the lower limit of its movement to allow actuation of the printing mechanism.
12. In a combined typewriting and com puting machine, in combination, printing mechanism including numeral keys, number-indexing means, and yieldable means for actuating the number-indexing means from the numeral keys, said yieldable means being of suflicient strength to actuate the number-indexing means without, yielding, but to yield when the number-indexing means has completed its movement, so as not to interfere with the action of the printing mechanism.
13. In a computing machine, in combination, computing mechanism including numberindexing devices, and actuating mechanism for said computing mechanism includ ing numeral keys and yielding devices interposed between said numeral keys and said number-indexing devices to actuate said numbenindexing devices and to permit fullstroke movements of the keys notwithstanding blocking of said yielding devices by said numbenindexing devices in their limiting positions.

In a computing machine, in combination, numeral keys, key-controlled denomination-selecting means thrown into action at the end of each key-stroke, number-indexing means, and yielding devices for transmitting movement from said numeral keys to said munber-indexing means and permitting additional movement of the keys in case of blocking by said number-indexing means, to the end that the numeral keys may initiate the action of the denominationselecting means.
15. In a combined typewriting and computing machine. including computing mechanism. the combination with a printing key, of a device adapted to be operated thereby and forming part of the computing mechanism, a pendant for operating said device, a lever for the key. a bracket pivoted on the lever. a pivot on said bracket for said pendant, and a spring normally holding said bracket swung against part of the lever, and adapted to yield to permit the bracket to turn to permit the key to descend after the pendant is arrested by the device.
