The invention -is illustrated as applied to a Ro al standard machine, although it is applica le to machines of other types. Only so much of the machine is illustrated as is necessary to show the construction and operation of the invention. In the drawings: Figure 1 is a fore and aft vertical section a0 with parts in elevation showing the mechanismin normal position.

It is obvious, therefore, that upon depression of any key lever, the escapement is'actuated in the usual manner and a double letter 'space movement of the `carriage will take place unless this is prevented in some manner. v p A lever 2 is pivoted at 3 to a bracket carried .by the shift frame B, and this lever has an oliset end 4 most clearly shown`in Figwidely yvaried without departing of the escapement wheeland consequently of ure 3.. When the parts are in the position shown in Figure 1 .and the platen is in' lower case position, the depression of any key lever which operates the universal bar 20 will move the stop 4 into operative position as shown in Figure 2 and thus limits the movement of the carriage to a single letter space movement. `When the carriage and platen are shifted to upper caseposition, the lever 2 lwhich is carried by the shift frame will move upward into the dotted line position of llgure 1 and the fork will move out of engagement with the pin 8. When in this position the actuation of any'key lever will produce a double space movement of the carriage since even if the universal bar 20 isoperated the resultant movement of the arm 9 will be an idle movement producing no effect on the lever 2.
lt will be apparent that any desired characters may be given a single space by proper selection of the engaging portions 22 of the universal bar 20. It is also obvious that the change produced by the case shift movement of the carriage is entirely automatic and requires no attention on the part of the operator. "llhe construction by which the result is obtained is very simple and efficient and the mechanism can be embodied in the usual machine Without the necessity of making any change in the. construction of the regu lar machine. lt is only necessary that the stop 1 shall be normally set to allow the step Leraars ping dog a double space movement. Various features may be modified without in any way departing from the spirit of the invention which is to be regarded as limited only by the scope of the appended claims.
l claim as my invention:
1. i ln a typewriting'machine having a shift frame and an escapement mechanism including a stepping dog; a stop permitting normal double space movement of said dog, an auxiliary stop, and means for moving said auxiliary stop into position to .limit said do to a single space movement, said means inc uding connections which are disabled when the shift frame is moved to upper case position.
2. ln a typewriting machine having key levers, a shift frame, and an escapement mechanism including a stepping dog; a stop permitting normal double space movement of said dog, anauxiliary stop, and means operated by certain of said key levers`for moving said auxiliary stop into position to limit said dog to a single space movement, said means including connections which are disabled when the shift frame is moved to upper case position.
3. ln a typewriting machine having keyv levers, a shift frame, and an escapement 'mechanism including a stepping dog; a stop permitting normal double space movement of said dog, an auxiliary stop, and means Y operated by certain of said key levers for moving said auxiliary stop into position to limit said dog to a single space movement, said means including connections which are separated when the shift frame is moved to upper case position.
