TYPEWRITING MACHINE.

The invention disclosed in this applcalion is in the nature of an improvement upon that disclosed in my application Ser. No. 226,952, filed October 18, 1927. yIn said applicationy there was disclosed a mechanism for Writing languages in which many characters required a double space. All upper case characters were given a double space while some lower case characters might be given a single space as desired.
It has now been found desirable to be able to give certain upper' case characters a single space and the present invention is directed to'mechanism for attaining such result without interfering in any way with the construction and operation of the mechanism disclosed in said prior application.

b Figure 5 is a front view of a universal The drawings disclose a portion of the main frame A, a shift frame B which supports a shaft C carrying a pinion D with which coacts a rack E supported in the usual manner on the carriage. `The shaft C also carries anescapementl wheel F with which cooperates a rigid dog H and a movable rdog K carried by a dog'rocker G. The type action comprises the usual key levers each of which is connected by a link M to a front link N, the free end of which is connected by a link O to the rear end of a type bar P. The link O is connected by another link R to the usual universal bar S by which the escapementmechanism is operated. As illustrated, these parts are such as are usually employed in the Royal'machine but they may be widely varied without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The dog rocker G is provided with a stop 1 which normally limits the movement of the stepping dog to the position a shown in dotted lines in Figure 3 and this movement results in a double letter spacing movement of the escapement wheel and consequently of the carriage. The mechanism is therefore normally such that the depression of any key will result in a double letter space movement of the carriage.
The level-.2 is pivoted at 3 to a bracket carried by the shift frame B and this lever has an odset end 4 most clearly shown in Figure 3. Whenever this lever is moved the offset end thereof comes into the path of the movable dog K and limits its stepping movement vto thel dotted line position b of Figure 3 which permits only a single letter spacing movement of the escapement wheel and carriage.- The spring 5 which is connected at one end to an ear 6 of the lever 2 and at its other end to a fixed part 7 normally holds the lever 2 in the Figure l'position in which it is inoperative. The lever 2 is moved from the Figure 1 to the Figure 2 or operative position in the following manner: The lower end of this l\lever is forked and engages over a pin 8 carried by an arm'9`which is pivoted at 10 to a bracket 11 supported by the frame of the machine. This. arm is normally held in the Figure 1 position by means of a spring 12 which is .connected at one end to the arm 9 and 'at its other end to an ear 13 on the bracket 11. A bent over ear 14 of the arm 9 contacts with the bracket 11 t6 limit the movement of the arm under the vinfluence of the spring 12 and an armor extension 15 coaets with the `bracket H tolimit the movement of the arm 9 when it is operated.
The arm 9 is operated by means of an adjustable link 16 which is connected thereto at one end and at its other end to an arm 17 which is fast on a rock shaft 18. This rock shaft carries near its end two forwardly extending arms 19 which supportuniversal bar 20. This bar has cut out portions 21 so that certain key levers may be voperated without contacting withthe bar or producing any movement thereof. It also has portions 22 with which certain key levers will Contact when operated and thereby impart movement to the universal bar.` In order that the universal bar 20 may be given a uniform movement the contacting portions are arranged at different levels as indicated at c, d, and e. The space bar is supported by levers which contact 4with the outer projections 23 of the universal bar Y the platen is in lower case position will give a single space movement of the carriage but a double space movement when the platen is in upper case position.
lVhen the parts are in the position shown in Figure 1 and the platen is in lower case position, a depression of any key lever which operates the universal bar'2() will rock the arm 9 and move the lever 2 to the Figure 2 position so that the stop 4 will limit the movement of the escapement to a single letter space. When the carriage and platen are shifted to upper case position, however, the lever 2 which is carried by the shift frame will move upward into the dotted line position of Figure 1 or the full line position of Figure 4 and the fork will move out of engagement with the pin 8. When the parts are in this position the actuation of any key lever will produce a double spaje movement of the carriage since even if the universal bar 2O is operated the resultant movement of the arm 9 Will be an idle movement producing no effect upon the lever 2.
The construction thus far described is substantially that disclosed in my prior application above identified. It has now been found desirable to provide this construction with certain mechanism which will permit desired characters to be given a single letter space movement when the carriage is in its upper case position. This result has been attained in the following manner:
The frame 24 carried by the main frame of the machine has side bearings 25 to which are pivoted at 26 side arms of a universal frame provided with a cross bar 27. These side arms 28 are also connected by universal bar 29 having cut outs 30 in which engage the hooked ends of the links 31, the other ends of which are attached to arms 32 carried by certain key levers 33. The spring A34 normally holds the second universal frame in rear position and a stop 35 on said frame engages la bracket 36 to limit the movement of the frame under the influence of the spring.
The rear side of the lever 2 is provided with a downwardly extending arm 37 which when the parts are in lower case position as shown in Figure 1 lies sufficiently below the universal bar 29 that an actuation of this bar will not bring it into Contact with the extension 37 so that if any of the key levers 33 are operated when the platen is in lower ca'se position a double space movement will resultr unless such key levers operate the universal bar 20. However, when the platen is shifted to upper case position as shown in dotted lines 1n Figure 1 or in full lines in Figure 2, the extension 37 of the lever 2 moves upwardly to a position where it will be engaged by the universal bar 29 and operated to bring the stop 4 into position to limit the movement of the escapement to a .ment will result notwithstanding the fact that the normal connection between the stop and its operating means has been broken by such movement of the carriage. It is of course immaterial whether the key levers 33 operate the universal bar 20 or not when the carriage is in upper case position since the stop will be moved through the universal bar 29.
It is apparent that the' present .invention` adds to the previous construction means for limiting the movement of the carriage to a single letter space when in upper case position by means of the same stop mechanism. This additional means however in no way interferes with or modifies the action of the mechanism for limiting the carriage to a single space movement when in lower case position. In other words, the present invention provides an escapement mechanism which normally permits a double space movement of the carriage and one means for limiting this movement to a single space when the carriage is in lower case posltion and a separate means for limiting the movement of the carriage to a single space when it is in upper case position.- The same key lever may operate both means if desired. There are two distinct trains of connections for operating the lever 2 but only one train loo only by the scope of the appended clailns.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a typewriting machine having a shift frame and an escapement mechanism including a stepping dog; a stop permittin normal double space movement of sai dog, an auxiliary stop, means for moving the auxiliary stop into position to limit said dog to a single space movement, said means including connections which are disabled when the shift frame is moved to upper case position, and other means for moving the auxiliary stop into operative position at this time.
2. In a typewriting machine having key levers, a shift frame, and an escapement mechanism including a stepping dog; a stop permitting normal double space movementof said dog, an auxiliary stop, means operated by certain of said key levers for moving said auxiliary stop into position to limit said dog to a single space movement, said means including connections which are disabled when the shift frame is mwa@ to upper space position, and other means operated by certain of the key levers for moving the auxiliary stop into operative position at this time.
3. In a typewriting machine having key levers, a shift frame, and an escapement mechanism including a stepping dog; a stop permitting normal double space movei ment of said dbg, an auxiliary stop, means operable when the shift frame is in one Case position for moving the auxiliary stop into operative position to limit the dog to a single space movement, and separate means operable when the shift frame is in another case position for moving the auxiliary stop intooperative position.
4. In a typewriter machine `having key levers, a shift frame and an escapement mechanism including a stepping dog; a stop permitting normal double'space movement of said dog, an auxiliary stop, means operable when the shift frame is in one case position for moving the auxiliary stop into operative position to limit the dog to a single space movement, and separate means operable when the shift frame is in another lcase position for moving the auxiliary stop into operative position, each of said means being operable in only onev case position of the shift frame.
5. In a .typewriting machine having key levers, a shift frame and escapement mechanism including a stepping dog; a stop permitting normal double space movement of said dog, a lever pivoted on the shift frame, an auxiliary stop carried 4by said lever and movable into position to limit said dog to a single space movement, and two independent lmeans for operating said lever in Y two case positions of the shift frame.

7. In a typewriting machine having key levers, a shift frame'and escapement mechanism including a stepping dog; a stop permitting normal double space movement of said do a lever pivoted on the shift frame, an auxi iary stop carried by said lever and movable into position to limit said dog to a single space movement, and two independent means for operating said lever in two case positions of the shift frame, the operative connection of one of said means with the lever being broken by the movement of the shift frame to upper case position.
8. In a typewriting machine having key levers, a shift frame and escapement mechanism including a stepping dog; a stop permitting normal double space movement of said dog, a lever pivoted on the shiftframe, an auxiliary stop carried by said lever and movable into position to limit said dog to a single space movement, and two independent means for operating said lever in two case positions of the shift frame, the operative connection of one of said means with the lever being broken by the movement of the shift frame to upper case position, and this movement of the shift frame bringing the lever into position to be operated by the other of said means.
