Abstract

To achieve constant reaction conditions at each deposition point in the coating of objects by thermal decomposition of metallic compounds, heat and metal compound are supplied in constant alternation and in rapid succession to each part of the surface to be coated. The metal compound may be solid, liquid or gaseous and may be supplied as a spray or as a solution; iron and nickel carbonyls are referred to. The source of heat may be gas jets, jets of hot powder e.g. metal particles from a spray gun, jets of hot liquid, hot contact bodies, infra-red rays, electromagnetic rays or ultrasonic impulses. The coating of paper, textiles, synthetic resins and foils is referred to. The base as a whole, or merely the surface thereof, may be heated prior to the metallising process.
