749,059. Automatic voltage control systems. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. Jan. 11, 1954 [Jan. 9, 1953], No. 716/53. Class 38 (4). In an automatic voltage control system for a grid-controlled rectifier 1, 2, 3 of the kind in which the difference between the D.C. output voltage at 15 and a reference 'voltage at 13 is electronically amplified at 11 and used to bias the rectifier, switching surges are prevented by providing the main power contactor 6 with a linked auxiliary contact 16 which short-circuits the input signal to the amplifier 11 when the rectifier is inoperative. When the main contactor 6 is closed, the contact 16 opens shortly after and it is stated that the D.C. output voltage will gradually adopt its stable value. A condenser 17 may be connected across contact 16 to further retard the response of the system. Specification 747,035 is referred to.
