Abstract

748,920. Pneumatic single-stroke apparatus. WILLIAMS, R. S. Sept. 30, 1954 [Nov. 4, 1953], No. 30422/53. Class 8(2). [Also in Group XXIX] A pneumatic power transmission apparatus comprises a main pneumatically operated piston 19 in cylinder 17, a secondary pneumatically operated piston 27 in cylinder 13, a supply pipe 32 for feeding air to effect the working stroke of the main piston 19 and a valve 36 in the pipe 32 which operates at a predetermined pressure to direct the air for effecting the working stroke of the piston 27 the effort of the piston 27 being transmitted to the main piston through the medium of hydraulic fluid. The piston 19 is formed with a bore 23 slidable on a boss 22 secured to a partition 11 and having a bore 26 in which the rod 28 of the piston 27 is slidable. In the outer end position of the piston 27 the bore 26 communicates through ports 30 with hydraulic fluid in the chamber formed between the outer casing 10 and the cylinder 17. Air initially acts on the piston 19 to push the rod 20 outwards until the pressure rises to open the valve 36 to supply air to the piston 27 which transmits power to the piston 19 through the hydraulic link. In a modification, Fig. 4, the cylinder 40 is surrounded by a member 48 of resilient material and filled with hydraulic fluid connected to the inner end of the cylinder 40 containing the piston 42. Air pressure is applied to the outside of the member 48 and the piston 42 is thereby moved through the hydraulic link until the hydraulic and air pressure are balanced whereon a valve 58 is opened to actuate the piston 46 which as above described acts through the hydraulic link on the piston 42.
