748,681. Photographic emulsions. AGFA AKT.-GES. FUR PHOTOFABRIKATION. March 16, 1954 [March 16, 1953], No. 7662/54. Class 98 (2). In the production of direct positive photographic images with the aid of the Herschel effect, the silver halide emulsion used contains a desensitizing compound of the general formula wherein Y completes a heterocyclic six-membered ring, which may carry a fused-on benzene ring and X is a halogen or other acid radical. Small quantities of copper salts may be present. The desensitizing compound may be incorporated at any stage in the preparation of the emulsion, or in the final emulsion layer by bathing or in the developing solution. In examples 1 to 4, 2-mercaptobenzthiazole, copper sulphate, and o-nitrobenzylpyridinium chloride, o - nitrobenzylquinolinium chloride, p - nitrobenzyl - 2 - methylpyridinium chloride, and m - nitrobenzylpyridinium chloride respectively are added to a silver halide emulsion. In example 5, o-nitrobenzylpyridinium chloride and benzimidazole are added to a silver halide emulsion, and in example 6, m-nitrobenzylpyridinium chloride, benzimidazole, and copper sulphate are added to a silver halide emulsion.
