In the fine grain development of photographic silver halide emulsions, a polycarboxymethylamino compound or a water-soluble salt thereof is added to the developer in amounts of 1 per cent or more by weight of water or used in a preliminary or after-development bath in amounts of 0.1 per cent or more by weight of water. Additives specified are trimethylaminotricarboxylic acid, ethylenediamine-tetracetic acid, di - (#,# - methylamino - diethylamine - dicarboxylic acid and p-phenylene-diaminediacetic acid and their sodium salts. The additives may be used in admixture with alkalis such as sodium or potassium hydroxides or carbonates, phosphates, hexametaphosphates, acid phosphates, bisulphites and silver and silver bromide solvents such as thiocyanates, thiosulphates, or cyanides.
