Abstract
Silver halides are precipitated in aqueous solution in the presence of a salt of a compound of the formula Q-(CH2.CH2O)x-CH2.CH2.O.SO3H wherein Q is an alkoxy group of 10-22 carbon atoms or a phenoxy group which may carry alkyl or alkoxy substituents and x is 5-25. A small proportion of gelatin may be present during the precipitation. Q may be n-C12 H25O-, n-C18H37O- or 2;4-di-n-amylphenoxy. In the examples, aqueous silver nitrate is run into aqueous solutions of ammonium bromide and iodide, or ammonium bromide and potassium iodide, or ammonium chloride and bromide, in the presence of ammonia and the compound (n-C5H11)2-C6H3 O-(CH2.CH2O)11 -CH2CH2O.SO3Na. The mixture is neutralized with sulphuric acid, and the silver halides precipitated by adding aqueous sodium sulphate. Specification 747,801 is referred to.
