Abstract

609,818. Photographic emulsions incorporating anti-fogging substances. GENERAL ANILINE & FILM CORPORATION. July 5, 1945, No. 17234. Convention date, July 1, 1944. [Class 98 (ii)] Fog in a silver halide emulsion is prevented by the incorporation either therein or in an adjacent layer of a sulphinic or seleninic acid or a salt thereof and of an organic sulphide compound of one of the formulae HRN-Sn- NRH and wherein R is an aryl radical, n is 1 to 4, and Z represents the non-metallic atoms to complete a 5. or 6-membered heterocyclic ring. The compounds may be incorporated in backing, inter (including substratum), overcoating, or baryta layers. The sulphide may be morpholine mono- and di-sulphide, piperidine tetrasulphide, proline disulphide, or compounds obtained by the action of sulphur mono- or dichloride on aniline and its homologues and derivatives. The compounds may be added to the emulsion during ripening, or the cast emulsion may be coated with a solution of the compounds. In examples: (a) sodium ptoluenesulphinate or sodium benzeneseleninate and morpholine disulphide; (b). sodium pchlorobenzene sulphinate and morpholine monosulphide; (c) sodium benzenesulphinate and proline disulphide (obtained by treating a carbon tetrachloride suspension of 1-proline with sulphur monochloride in the presence of sodium carbonate; (d) sodium benzenesulphinate, morpholine disulphide, and sulphuric acid. Sodium naphthalenesulphinate or ethanesulphinate may also be used. Backing paper for roll films may also be impregnated with sodium thiophenesulphinate and a mono- or polysulphide. Specification 441,625 is referred to. The Specification is open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers also to the use of compounds of one of the formula R1RN-Sn-NRR1 and wherein R1 is alkyl or aryl, n is a positive integer, and Y is N, O, S, or -CH2, and to the use of morpholine tri- and tetra-sulphides. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
