Abstract

522,997. Stabilizing photographic emulsions. KODAK, Ltd. (Eastman Kodak Co.). Sept. 23, 1938,No. 27794. [Class 98 (ii)] Fog is prevented by incorporating in a finished washed emulsion not more than 8 milligrams per 100 cubic centimetres of a compound of the general formula where A is hydrogen, alkyl or aryl, D represents a pair of adjacent carbon atoms belonging to a vinylene, ethylene, phenylene or naphthylene group, any of which groups may carry substituents, R is alkyl, X is the radical of a substantially colourless acid, and Y is oxygen, sulphur, or selenium. The emulsions may contain sensitizing dyes. The quaternary salts from benzthiazole, 1 - methylbenzthiazole, 1 - phenylbenzthiazole a or # - naphthathiazole, 1 - methylbenzoxazole, 1-methylbenzselenazole, 2-methylthiazoline, 2:4-dimethylthiazole, 2-methyl-4- phenylthiazole, 1-methyl-5-ethoxybenzthiazole, and 2-methyl-#-naphthathiazole may be used. The bases themselves may show antifogging effect. Numerous examples of suitable quaternary salts are given. One or more quaternary salts may be used, and may be added to the emulsion in methyl alcohol solution. Thiazole yellow sensitizes collodion silver halide emulsion. The addition of the trimethylammonium chloride derivative of dehydrothiotoluidine. Thiazole Yellow, and Mimosa Z to gelatino silver halide emulsions during ripening is referred to The use in combination of the two organic dyes 1:1<SP>1</SP>- diethylthiacarbocyanine iodide and 1:1<SP>1</SP>-diethyl- 2:2<SP>1</SP>-carbocyanine iodide improves stability.
