Abstract

748,652. Filters. GENERAL MOTORS, Ltd. March 15, 1954 [May 1, 1953], No. 12100/53. Class 46. [Also in Group XXVI] In a seal for a container for a liquid the seal is effected, around an aperture in a flat part of the container surrounded by a conical part of it, by means of a skirted cap which contains an annular gasket adapted to be held under pressure such that the gasket engages the flat part and the edge of the skirt engages the conical part of the container. A hollow filter element 12, Fig. 1, is supported and retained in a container 11 by a hollow apertured part 29 which is screwed into a combined inlet and outlet member 14. The container 11 is in turn retained against a sealing washer 15 in the member 14 by a metal cap 22 having a skirt 24 so as to form an annular cavity around the part 29, Fig. 2, the cavity containing a resilient gasket 23 having in the unstressed condition a cross-section which may be trapezoidal, Fig. 5. The flat and conical parts 17, 18 of the container 11 and the skirt 24 of the cap are mutually so dimensioned that when the part 29 has been screwed into the inlet and outlet member 14 and a cap-retaining bolt 21 has been screwed into the part 29 the edge of the skirt 24 engages only the conical part 18 and only the resilient gasket 23 engages the flat part 17 of the container 11. The cap 22 instead of being a washer, as shown, may be integral with the head of the bolt 21 or with the hollow part 29.
