Abstract
748,640. Opening fibres. HAMBLETT, B. Nov. 11, 1954 [Feb. 22, 1954], No. 5081/54. Class 120 (1). Bale cotton &c. is fed by a conveyer 12 into a chamber 10 in which it circulates in the form of a loose roll, saw-toothed opening cylinders 26, 27 being so disposed that the end ones (in the direction of fibre circulation) co-operate with the wall 29 of the chamber to impart a generally oval configuration to the roll, each cylinder having its own suction flue intake for delivery of the opened fibre, and all the cylinders 26 coacting with individual doffers 31. The four end doffers deliver to branches 33 of a flue 32; the top doffer delivers to a duct 41 and cylinder 27 to a duct 42 communicating with duct 41, the joint flue communicating subsequently with duct 32. The flues have inspection windows such as 48 covered by transparent panels 47. The stripping of doffers 31 is assisted by air intakes 34; air admission to the middle three ducts is controlled by damper plates 43. Each cylinder 26 consists of parallel circular saws 23 clamped between fibre end discs 24 and spacers 25 and inclined slightly with respect to the cylinder axis. Cylinder 27 and doffers 31 each consist of a metal cylinder helically grooved to receive toothed wire.
