Abstract
748,296. Feeding webs. HEMPHILL CO. June 30, 1953 [Aug. 28, 1952], No. 18130/53. Class 100 (1). [Also in Group VIII] A loop of fabric extending between the machine and take-up rollers 5, 6 supports a weighted roller 1 which maintains the tension of the fabric substantially constant, any variation in the loop length due to a variation in the production rate causing the roller to fall or rise and thereby immobilizing or mobilizing the ratchet mechanism 8, 9 driving the take-up rollers 5, 6. The ratchet mechanism 8, 9 drives the take-up rollers at a rate such that the fabric will be taken up at a rate in excess of that at which it is produced. As the roller 1 is raised a pin 27 engages lever 24 to cause a catch 25 to hold the rocking arm 14, operating the ratchet mechanism through rod 11, stationary, thereby stopping the operation of the take-up rollers. As the loop length increases and the roller 1 drops, a pin 21 engages the lever 24 and causes it to release the catch 25 and permit operation of the ratchet mechanism.
