Abstract
748,208. Making projectiles; jointing by forging. JONES, C., and McCORMICK, G. B. March 23, 1949, No. 7892/49. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). A metal inset, e.g. the driving band 13, is seated in a recess in an object, e.g. the shell 4, by placing the shell in a tapered die 3 and over the shell the driving band which is out of register with the recess, then pressing the annular punch 12 against the driving band. Till the band rests against the lower lip of the recess, the shell remains stationary, but as the thrust of the spring 6, mounted between the movable plate 7 and the fixed plate 8 is overcome, the shell and band move together through the tapered die to force the band into the recess. As the punch 12 passes the throat of the die, the excess metal from the band is drawn out into a collar. The same method may be applied to other than vertical presses.
