Abstract
746,712. Casting-machines. SAUTER, H., and HAHN, W., [trading as HAHN & KOLB]. April 23, 1954 [April 25, 1953], No. 11757/54. Class 83 (1). A die-casting machine of the type in which molten metal is introduced into a die cavity in a two-part die from a shot sleeve which is perpendicular to the parting face of the die, comprises a gate element between the sleeve and the die and movable independently axially thereof to a limited extent so that the metal slug formed between the gate element and the plunger of the shot sleeve becomes torn off from the residue in the gates as the die parts are moved from the sleeve to the open position. The die comprises a part 9 carried by a plunger 11 and includes an ejector mechanism 12, 13 operated by a rack-and-pinion 29, 30, and a part 8 movable on tie-rods 3. The separate gate element comprises a plate 14 with a central insert 17 and is carried by rods 15 slidable in the front plate 1 of the machine. In operation, after injection of metal by the plunger 6 the dies are opened by operation of the plunger 11, the die part 8 and the gate element being initially constrained to follow the die part 9 by compression springs 25 and by the engagement of the plug 41 and slug 26 in the gates 18, 19. Heads 16 of the rods 15 then engage the front plate 1, to stop movement of the plate 14 and tear off the slug 26, the die part 8 continuing to move under the action of the springs 25 until stopped by the stops 22. A modified gate element is stated to permit dies made for use with a vertical shot sleeve and a lateral gate to be used with a horizontal shot sleeve.
