745,710. Dynamometers. ROLLS-ROYCE, Ltd. Dec. 3, 1954 [Dec. 4, 1953], No. 33857/53. Class 106 (2). In a liquid-brake dynamometer having a rotor revolving in a liquid-filled casing 10 the deflection of the torque-arm 11 against a spring 13 and weight 12 is balanced by a tank 15 containing a variable quantity of liquid 17 and means are provided to measure the amount of the liquid 17. To provide for remote operation and measurement, the liquid may be supplied to the tank 15 from a remote second tank 18, the two tanks 15, 18 forming a system having a constant volume of liquid therein so that the torque may be measured by measuring the volume of liquid remaining in the second tank 18, e.g. by a sight glass 22. Liquid may be caused to flow from tank 18 to tank 15 by air under pressure and to return by a syphoning action, or the liquid may be pumped from one tank to the other. To indicate remotely when the torque is balanced, electric contacts 24 may be provided adjacent the arm 11. These contacts may also be utilized to control the flow of balancing liquid between the two tanks.
