Abstract

744,852. Rotary meters. KENT, Ltd., G. June 23 1954 [June 24, 1953], No. 17511/53. Glass 110(2) A: mass-flow meter comprises a rotor rotated by the liquid being measured and means responsive to the density of the liquid to control the rotation of the rotor so that its rate of rotation is proportional to the mass flow of liquid. In Fig. 1 (Provisional) a rotor 2 is connected to an indicator 5 through gearing 3. Rotation of the rotor is damped by damping blades 6 which are secured between pairs of arms 7 pivoted at 8, Fig. 2 (Provisional), between flanges 9 on the rotor spindle 10. The reaction pressure on the blades is proportional to n<SP>2</SP>d, where n is the speed of rotation and d is the density of the liquid, tending to turn the blades 6 about their pivots 8 in a clockwise direction. The masses of the blade structures, supplemented by masses at 11 if necessary, give rise to central forces proportional to n<SP>2</SP> tending to turn the blades 6 in an anti-clockwise direction, hence the radial setting of the blades will depend on the density only. In a modification, Fig. 3 (Provisional), the damping blades 12 turn about pivots 13 perpendicular to their faces and their radial position is not affected by the density of the liquid but is controlled by another pair of density sensitive blades 15. In another form, Fig. 1, blades 18 of the rotor pivot about radial axes 19 and take up a setting proportional to the density of the liquid. The blades and masses may be suitably placed to eliminate the affects of gravity and acceleration.
