Class 97(2) [Also in Group XXXVIII] In a fluid flowmeter, a uniform angular velocity is imparted to the fluid-by means rotating, at a constant speed and the fluid is then caused to strike a member, which is rotatable, against the action of restraining means, by the torque applied by the fluid and is adapted to indicate the mass rate of flow. As shown in Fig. 1, the flowmeter comprises a casing 1 with fluid inlet and outlet 2, 3 and having therein an impeller 4 and turbine 5 each with several peripheral slots 6, 7. The impeller is mounted on a hollow shaft 11 in an end bracket 12 and is continuously rotated through gearing 10 by a constant speed motor 8. Carried by the shaft 11 and an end bracket 14 is a shaft 13 on which the turbine 5 is rotatable, this turbine normally being held stationary by a spring 15. The fluid is caused to flow through the casing as by a pump (not shown). Angular velocity is imparted to the fluid by impeller 4 and the turbine is rotated against the action of spring 15 until the angular momentum is dissipated. The deflection of the turbine and therefore the mass rate of flow is indicated by an index 17 and a scale on the turbine which can be read through a window 16. In another form-the motor for-driving the impeller is housed in the upstream bracket 12 and the turbine shaft carries the permanent magnet rotor of an electrical pick off for actuating a remote indicator, Fig. 3 (not shown). The slots 6. 7 in the impeller and turbine may extend radially. Two such forms of flowmeter are described in one of which the mass rate is indicated by a pointer moving over a scale, (Fig. 6) while in the other a remote indication of the mass rate is provided by electrical means (Fig. 5). In an alternative, the turbine may be continuously driven to a predetermined position, the power measured to preserve this position being indicative of the mass rate of flow.
