[Also in Group XXXVIII] A device for measuring the rate of fluid flow comprises means for causing a magnet assembly to rotate relative to an oscillatable armature which oscillates between contacts and thereby successively charges and discharges a condenser to give a measure of the rate of flow. The device may be used for measuring the flow of liquid or gas in a pipe, but is particularly suitable as a towed or attached ship's log, or, when anchored, for measuring water currents. For this purpose the device (Fig. 5) comprises a streamlined plastic watertight housing 25 containing a shaft 26 on which is mounted another housing 27 fitted with vanes 34 for rotation by the water currents. One or more magnets 30 are mounted equidistantly in the housing 27, and as the latter rotates, the magnets pass in front of a further magnet 35 in the fixed housing 25. This magnet is pivoted on a bar 36 and is caused to oscillate from side to side as the other magnets pass it. The other end of the magnet 35 engages alternately a contact 45 and a similar contact on the other side, and thus successively charges and discharges a condenser for measuring the rate of operation of the contacts (see Group XXXVIII). In a modification (Fig. 1, not shown), the magnets 30 are placed radially and the oscillating magnet is adjacent to them so that it moves towards and away from the axis of the rotor. When towed by a ship a suitable paravane attachment coaxial with the cable ensures that the device is submerged to a predetermined depth. For use with a pipe line the oscillating armature is preferably located outside the pipe. The apparatus can be adapted to calculate the distance travelled by a ship, and hence its position.
