Abstract

1,007,435. Rotary Meters. DE HAVILLAND AIRCRAFT CO. Ltd. Nov. 15, 1961 [Dec. 10, 1960], No. 42593/60. Heading F1F. The sensing element of a rotary fluid flowmeter comprises a bladed rotor 14, mounted for rotation in a conduit 11 in which fluid normally flows in one direction and vanes 33 downstream of the rotor blades 24 which can impart rotation to a fluid flowing in an opposite direction, whereby the rotational effect of the said opposite flow upon the rotor is largely reduced. The spindle of the rotor is mounted in polyfluorethylene bushes 17 and 27 supported in the conduit on radial arms 19 and 29. The vanes 33 are helically twisted and overlap part of the rotor 14 downstream of the blades 24. A magnet 25 in the rotor is magnetised across a diametral plane of the latter so that its rotation generates a current in a coil (not shown) in a recess 26 in the housing 10, the frequency of the current being a direct puncture of the rotational speed of the rotor and measurable by a frequency meter. The meter is intended for measuring the flow of potable fluids, e.g., milk and the reverse flow of, e.g., steam cleanses the motor. The purpose of the device disclosed is to prevent the reverse flow of these from rotating the rotor at such a speed that it will be damaged.
