Abstract
765,206. Rotary meters. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Aug. 26, 1955 [Aug. 10, 1954], No. 23227/54. Class 110 (2). The meter has a rotor with axial vanes 4, on a spindle 5, and one or more entrances 13, for air or other gas, designed to convert the incoming gas into a jet or jets following a spiral path within the casing 1. The casing may be made of plastic material closed at one end 9, and the usual indicating mechanism 7 placed between the wall 9 and an outer cover protecting the indicator needles 8. The outer end 3 may be attached to a respirator base or to any other point to which the metered air or gas flow is to be directed. The vanes 4 may be of plastic material mounted on a light spindle 5 which may be supported in jewelled bearings 6. The rotor and indicating mechanism are carried by a framework constructed as a unit, which is removable as a whole from the stator. Different sized units may be used in the stator. The meter may be used in an anaesthetic apparatus. Fig. 5 (not shown) has a modification in which only a portion of the air stream passes through the meter, some air entering the stator by way of a weighted by-pass valve 17. Fig. 7 shows a further arrangement with inlet deflecting guidevanes 18 causing the air stream to spiral through the casing. The meter is insensitive to reverse air flow but a check valve may be provided to prevent expired air from passing back through the meter and thus to protect it from moisture. The meter may be used for measuring the velocity of the wind.
