Abstract
745,653. Mounting bearings. KELVIN & HUGHES, Ltd. Jan. 15, 1954 [Feb. 10, 1953], No. 3719/53. Class 12 (1). [Also in Group XX] In gyro rotor spindle bearings the inner and outer races in each bearing are relatively axially movable by five to fifteen thousandths of an inch and springs means are arranged to apply an axial load to take up the play in both bearings. Preferably, the inner races 30 and 32 are held spaced apart while the outer races 31 and 33 are pressed towards each other. As shown, the outer races engage centrally recessed plates 45 and 36 one, 45, of which is slidable and pressed inwards by the resilient arms of plate spring 47, and the other 36 is fixed. The inner races 30, 32 are held apart by flange 42 and shoulder 51, ring 41 being interposed between race 30 and flange 42 and collet 37 between shoulder 51 and race 32. Spring 47 is mounted on spigot 46 of plate 45 and is loaded centrally towards the bearing by an annular shoulder 48 on sleeve 40. The outer race 31 is slidable in sleeve 40. Rotor 16 is electrically driven by fixed permanent magnet 21 and coil 20 carried on rotor spindle 26. Grub screw 50 acts as a stop.
