Abstract

A process for the purification of petroleum resins present in or formed during the refining of low asphalt crude, comprises treating the resins with an absorbent. The resins may be treated whilst dissolved in a solvent or a mineral lubricating oil, the proportion of solvent being 50 to 700 per cent by volume based on the resin. The absorbent may be carbon, alumina, silica gel, or an active siliceous earth such as florida earth, fullers earth or montmorillonite, the proportion of absorbent being less than 30 per cent by weight of the resin. The treatment, which preferably lasts for less than 10 hours, can take the forms of agitation followed by filtration or of percolation and may be carried out at a temperature ranging from room temperature to 250 DEG C. The treatment may be conducted in the presence of an oxidation inhibitor, particularly a hindered phenol. The resin may be alcohol washed (e.g. with isopropyl alcohol) either before or after treatment with the absorbent.
