A device for driving the main cylinder and/or doffer of a carding engine and a tension head for feeding fillet of card clothing to the cylinder or doffer has an electric motor driving a gearwheel fixed on the cylinder shaft and carried by a yoke fixed relatively to the carding engine. The motor 11 is attached to the yoke 10 and drives a reduction unit 12 that carries a sprocket 14 driving a sprocket 15 at a reduced speed through a chain 16. Also mounted on the yoke 10 is a switch-box 18 for controlling the motor 11. Beneath the yoke 10, two castings 20 (one only shown) are held side-by-side by bolts 19 carrying spacer members and a gear-wheel 26 is mounted between the castings 20 and supported by them. This wheel 26 is geared to the sprocket 15 and carries jaws 31 for gripping the cylinder shaft 9. To prevent rotation of the yoke 10 with the shaft 9, stays 37 adjustable in pedestals 38 engage with bolts passing through the yoke. Sprockets of various sizes may be secured to the shaft 34 carrying the sprocket 15 and serve to drive the sprocket 8 of the tension head through a chain, the size of the sprocket used depending on the width of card fillet being applied. It is stated that in alternative arrangements, the gear wheel 26 may be keyed to the shaft 9, or the gear-wheel may be a permanent fixture on the shaft to form a sun-wheel related to planetwheels provided round a circle in the yoke, or the end of the shaft 9 may be locked within a sleeve to which a shaft of the driving device is also locked.
