Abstract

662,060. Chain gearing. MORRIS MOTORS, Ltd. Jan. 20, 1950 [Feb. 3, 1949], No. 2958/49. Class 80 (i).. [Also in Group XXVII] Chain tensioning means, particularly applicable to the drive for the overhead cam-shaft of an internal-combustion engine, comprises a floating countershaft 7 which is located between the driving sprocket on the crank-shaft 4 and the driven sprocket 2 on the cam-shaft and is spring urged to tension both chains 5 and 6 simultaneously. The countershaft 7, to which are keyed sprockets 8, 9, is mounted in two-part bearing blocks, 14, 14a. The blocks are received in slots 13 provided in two arms 10, 11, forming a bracket pivoted at 12 on an axis parallel to, and above, the crank-shaft 4. The bearing blocks are also embraced by a pair of slotted arms 15, 16, pivoted at 18 to the bracket and provided with a projection 19 engaged by a spring-loaded plunger 20, which thus urges the shaft 7 in a direction to tension both chains. The line 21 in Fig. 2 represents the fan belt driving the dynamo 22 and water pump 23 of the engine.
