Abstract

744,667. Helmets. EVANS, T. I. Nov. 18, 1953 [Nov. 21, 1952], No. 29420/52. Class 63. A helmet comprises an outer shell 1 rotatably mounted by a ring or sleeve bearing or, as shown, a ball-bearing 3, 4, 5 and rubber pads 6 on an inner head engaging part 7, 8. The outer race 3 is secured to the shell 1 and the inner race 5 is bonded to spaced pads 6 secured to a flexible band 7 provided with a strap harness 8. Either the outer race 3 or inner race 5 may be formed of circumferentially spaced segments instead of a continuous annulus. Shaped hard rubber blocks may be disposed between the soft pads 6 and the inner race 5. An additional ballbearing may be located in the upper part of the helmet, the inner race of which is carried by light alloy ribs extending upwards from the lower inner race 5.
