Abstract

760,558. Helmets. EVANS, T. I. Nov. 3, 1954, No. 31743/54. Class 63. A helmet comprises an outer shell 1 of light metal or moulded fibre board or pulp having on its skirt spaced inwardly directed projections or, as shown, an inwardly projecting rib 2 which is located between ribs 3, 5 forming an annular channel on an inner metal ring 12. The ring 12 is lined with foam rubber 6 and a sweat band 7 and is carried by a harness 9. The shell 1 is carried on the ring 12 by coil springs 4 located between the ribs 2, 3 so that the shell 1 moves downwardly over the ring 12 against the action of the springs 4 when the helmet receives a blow. The straps 9 of the harness are secured to the ring 12 via coil springs 8 which are so stiff relatively to the springs 4 that they are extended only after the springs 4 have been excessively compressed.
