A protective helmet comprises an imperforate inner member e formed of polyethylene or other material capable of elastically absorbing impacts and connected to a head band g by steel springs f which may be integral with the headband. The member e is secured in spaced relationship to the steel shell b of the helmet by a screw c. A leather lining i is supported on the headband g. Other suggested materials for the member e are rubber, and felt reinforced with cord.
