[Class 63] A detachable lining for a protective helmet comprises an outer member 1 formed of sheet material of moderate stiffness, such as vulcanized fibre, which is retained in a shell 2 of a helmet by means of four tongues 4, one each at the front and back and one each at the sides, co-acting with corresponding lodgments 5 pressed up from patches 6. The latter are secured to the inside of the crown, e.g. without piercing the crown, so that the helmet is waterproof and electrically insulating. The lining 1 may be removed from the shell 2 by rotating it to bring the tongues 4 out of the lodgments 5. The two side patches as at 7 extend down, and are slotted to receive the ends of a chin strap. A number of V notches 3 enable the sections of the upper part of the outer member 1 to act resiliently against the shell 2 while conforming thereto, thus allowing some downward movement in reaction to a blow on the helmet. The lower edge of a skull cap 9 of flexible material is turned up and over the lower edge of the outer member 1, with the interposition of a soft pad 11, and stitched to said member. The tongues 4 may be formed integral with the outer member 1 or constructed as rubber blocks.
