Abstract

945,412. Protective headgear. CHRISTY & CO. Ltd. July 13, 1962 [July 15, 1961; Aug. 16, 1961], Nos. 25728/61 and 29498/61. Heading A3V. Protective headgear comprises outer and inner shells A and D of light metal or tough plastic material, such as a polyester and/or polyacrylic resin reinforced with glass fibres, and a continuous or discontinuous layer B of honeycomb material, preferably non-resilient, located between the shells and fixed to one of them, so that the axes of the cells of the honeycomb material are substantially normal to the adjacent parts of the latter. The shells may be arranged so that a small relative movement, restricted as by a flange E on one or the other, can occur between them. This flange may be perforated. Small ventilating holes H and I may be formed respectively, in the outer and inner shells. The honeycomb material may be made from aluminium or other light metal foil and the cells may be hexagonal. The layer B may comprise bands or trapezoidal pads of honeycomb material separated by gaps C and F. Head harness, e.g. a chin strap, may be anchored to the inner shell or, alternatively, one or more pads G of wool, felt or spongy material, such as foamed or expanded polyurethane, polystryrene or butadiene rubber, may be bonded to the inner surface of the inner shell. Groups of hearing slots may be formed in the earcovering portions of the shells and an ear pad, in the form of a ring L of spongy material, may be provided, on the inner surface of the inner shell, around each group of slots. The headgear may have a flexible peak or projecting rim.
