Abstract

744,442. Typewriters. STANDARD REGISTER CO. Nov. 11, 1953, No. 31292/53. Class 100 (4). A platen assembly comprises a rotatable shaft 10 and a body member 13, Fig. 2, which is keyed by a key 18 to it and to which the platen itself is similarly keyed. The body member is longitudinally adjustable on the shaft 10 to accommodate different lengths of platen and is retained in the adjusted position by a locking lever 27, Fig. 5, engaging transverse notches 12 in the shaft 10. The lever 27 is formed with two arms 29, 31 and is urged anti-clockwise about its pivot 25 by a spring 33 so that a blade 32 on the arm 29 enters a notch 12. A latch lever 28 having two arms 35, 36 is pivoted at 26 and urged anti-clockwise by a spring 41 to engage the lever 27 and hold it in the operative position. Depression of the arm 35 pivots the latch 28 clockwise so that the tooth and notch engagement of the arms 31, 36 is disengaged and then the arm 35 forces the arm 29 out of engagement with the notch 12 to allow longitudinal adjustment of the body member 13. The lever 27 is arranged so that centrifugal forces set up tend to keep the blade 32 engaged in the notch 12. The body member 13 may mount a pin wheel device the pins 46 being projected and retracted through holes 45 by a fixed eccentric arrangement as the platen rotates. The area over which, the pins are projected can be altered by a finger piece 51 to make the pin wheel operative or inoperative in the usual manner.
