Abstract

165,871. Harrington, F. C. A. March 3, 1919. No Patent granted (Sealing fee not paid). Line-spacing mechanism.-The line-spacing lever is movable towards the end of the platen roller for line-spacing, and is arrested by an adjustable stop which is mounted in a plate arranged about the pivot of the line-spacing lever. As shown, the line-spacing lever consists of a bell-crank a, mounted on a bush d<1> on a pivot d which is supported by a plate c formed on the carriage. The lower arm of the bell-crank is provided with a pawl f engaging a ratchet-wheel e on the platen-roller. The stop consists of a curved pin j carried by an arm m which is hinged at m<1> to the pivot d and can be moved to permit the insertion of the pin in holes k in the plate. The arm or pin is provided with a pointer l which is set opposite index-marks 1, 2, 3, on the plate. The arm is urged towards the plate by a spring n. The stop may be arranged to engage the lower arm of the bell-crank; or stops for engaging both arms may be provided. The pawl f is pivoted on a pin g on a block h, Fig. 4, which is formed with a squared part h<1> mounted for lateral adjustment in an elongated slot in the bell-crank. The pawl is held in engagement with the ratchet-wheel by means of a spring f<2> or a weighted part f<1> and is formed with a stop face f<3> for engaging the block h. In a modification, the pawl is mounted on an arm which is pivoted on the platen shaft and is provided with a pin engaging a slot in the line-spacing lever, or is connected to the line-spacing lever by a link.
