Abstract
166,846. Fairweather, W. C., (Underwood Typewriter Co.). Nov. 3, 1920. Ink-ribbon mechanism.-The vibrator-lever is mounted on the shift frame and engages a slot or guide-way in an operating-lever mounted on the main frame on an axis parallel to the direction of movement of the shift frame, the slot or guideway being arranged parallel to the axis of the operating-lever in order to transmit a uniform movement to the vibrator in all shift positions; the operating-lever may be connected to the universalbar mechanism by a link which can be adjusted to alter the throw of the vibrator for colour selection, or to silence the vibrator for stencilling. As shown, a vibrator-lever 57 is pivoted at 60 to a vertically shiftable rail 61 supporting the carriage 34, and is provided with a pin 56 engaging a vertical channel 55 provided on an horizontal operating-lever 52. Arms 76, 77 on the operating-lever engage a vertical pivot 53 supported by a bridge 80 on the main frame 19. The vibrator-lever is slotted to engage a pin 63 on the vibrator 64. A guide bracket 70 on the rail 61 is formed with fingers 71 engaging ears 72 on the vibrator 64, and a channel 73 engaging the end of the pin 63. A finger 99 on the bracket is arranged in the path of the pin to limit the movement of the vibrator. The universal-bar frame 35 is provided with an arm 50 having a finger 96 pivotally connected to a link 51 which carries a stud 83 engaging a curved slot 95 in the lever 52. The stud is formed with a flange 98 resting on the lever, and a stem which passes through the slot and carries a washer and nut. To permit adjustment, the stud is threaded on the link. The throw of the vibrator can be adjusted to present the black strip 81 or the red strip 82 at the printing point, by setting the stud at the left-hand or righthand end of the slot respectively, or the vibrator can be silenced for stencilling by setting the stud in register with a lost-motion recess 105 in the slot. For these purposes, an adjusting-lever 84, pivoted on a stud 91, is connected by a link 92 to a block 94 on the link 51, the finger-piece 85 of the lever being set with reference to marks. The adjusting-lever is retained in the set position by the resilient engagement of a rib 106 thereon with notches 107, 108, 109, Fig. 3, the notches 107, 109 being formed in adjustable arms 111, 112 secured by screws 113 passing through slots 114, and the notch 108 being formed by the space between the arms. The notches 107, 109 are arranged at a higher level than the notch 108 in order to increase the hold on the lever. Specifications 154,087, 154,807, and 158,417 are referred to.
