Abstract

983,549. Typewriters. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Dec. 6, 1961 [Dec. 20, 1960], No. 43646/61. Heading B6F. Machines with types upon spherical surfaces.- A typewriter of the type having a single element printing head 2, Fig. 3, mounted on a carrier 3 for sliding movement on a bar 4 by flexible cables 6 and 12, wrapped about pulleys 10 and 16 for rotation with shaft 11, is provided with a plurality of character keys and one or more special mark keys 1, Fig. 1, in which an escapement mechanism is actuated by depression of each of the character keys, the escapement mechanism being disabled by a compound linkage when one of the special mark keys are depressed. Letter-spacing mechanism.-When the character key 1, Fig. 1, is depressed a fluted shaft 60 is caused to rotate 180 degrees counter-clockwise causing a cam 58 to pivot a member 56 about a pin 45, so as to swing upwardly a bent portion 52, of an interposer 50, resting on a stepped portion 62 of the member 56, to thereby pivot counter-clockwise an arm 54 on a member 44 and displace a link 43, Figs. 1 and 4, longitudinally, which through a member 33 urges a lever 29 in a downward direction to pivot a bail plate 28 in a clockwise direction, which in turn rocks a bail 24 to engage a projection 26, Fig. 3, on a dog 20, and disengage the dog from teeth 22 of the bar 4 and effect escapement of the carrier 3. Accenting arrangements.-On depression of a special mark key 1, Fig. 1, a member 88 depresses an interposer 78, supported both for pivotal and longitudinal movement by a pin 79, whereupon the actuated fluted shaft 60 engages a heel portion 84 of the interposer 79 to pivot a rod 75 in a clockwise direction, to which is connected an arm 91 acting against an elongated member 91 connected to the interposer 50 to move it relative to the pin 45 to disengage the bent portion 52 from the arm 54 (Fig. 2, not shown). As the cam 58 rocks the member 56, no escapement takes place since the bent portion 52 is no longer between the arms 54 and 61. Having typed the special mark any key lever for another character to be typed under the mark may be depressed and the escapement, which meanwhile has been re-set, will be actuated in response to the actuation of the latter key. Specification 873,920 is referred to.
