A hinge comprises a leaf 2 adapted to be attached to a stationary member 5, a hinge pin 6, a leaf 1 adapted to carry a foldable flap 4 in a position such that the axis of the hinge pin lies substantially in the plane of the undersurface of the flap, and a latch device carried by leaf 1 and operable, when the flap is raised to the unfolded position, to enter into abutment with leaf 2 below the hinge pin so as to afford a rigid support for the flap, the latch device being manually releasable to enable the flap to return to its folded position. The leaves are of inverted channel form in crosssection, being provided for this purpose with side walls 7, and the side walls of leaf 2 are spaced farther apart than those of leaf 1 in order that the latter walls may pass within the former when the flap is lowered. The latch device comprises a lever 8 which is pivoted at 9 on leaf 1 and carries at its inner end a cross pin 11 urged by a spring 14 into recesses provided in raised portions 13 with which the inner ends of the side walls of leaf 2 are formed. The inner ends of the side walls of leaf 1 are formed with raised portions 16 adapted to prevent lateral displacement of the lever. Pin 11 is released by pressure on the outer end 10 of the lever to permit lowering of the flap, when pin 11 passes through an aperture 17 in leaf 1 and enters a recess 18 in member 5. In a modification the lever is in the form of a bell crank, the outer arm of which is operated, to release pin 11, by means of a push rod slidably mounted in leaf 1. The leaves may be cast from aluminium or aluminium alloy.
