Class 146(1) A rotary card index comprises a base 4, a post 5 extending upwardly therefrom at a small inclination to the vertical, a pair of rotatable carriers 6 mounted in spaced relationship on the post 5 and a plurality of panels 8 pivotally mounted between the carrier 6 about axes parallel to the axis of the post 5. The post 5 is at about 70 degrees to the vertical except at its lower end which is vertical and rotatably mountec in the base 4. The carriers 6 are spaced by a tube 7 and have a series of holes to receive pins 9 projecting from one edge of the panels 8. The panels 8 normally tend to fall to one side and for writing or examining the panels, the top two are supported by metal sheets 12 on a frame 11 hinged to a collar 10 at the top of the post 5. The frame 11 is pivoted upwards to allow the required panels 8 to lie between the sheets 12, when the frame is lowered to the position shown. As casing may enclose the post 5 and panels 8, with the doors thereof replacing the sheets 12 and frame 11 as supports for the panels. A brake disc 13 on the lower end of the post 5 is engaged by a brake band 14 connected to a lever 15 having an operating handle 17, the lever 15 being pivoted on a pin 16 in the base 4 and having its inner end between the limbs of a bifurcated bracket 18 which limits the movement of the lever, the brake band 14 being in close contact with the brake disc 13 in one limit position and slack on the disc in the other.
