[Class 52 (iii)] [See also Group XI] A music desk D, hinged to a slide A on a grand piano, is provided with hinged electric lamp supports 1 adapted to be swung automatically from an inoperative position behind the desk to operative position when the desk is raised into the open position. The supports 1 are connected by links 4, 8 and intermediate slidable rods 6 to a collar 9 secured to a slidable rod 10 carrying a loose collar 13 connected to a pivoted stay 14 on the slide. The desk is held in the open position by a spring 29 engaging the collar 13. On closing the desk, the collar 13 moves along the rod 10 until it engages the collar 9 and thereby operates the rod to swing the supports 1 into the inoperative position. Lost motion occurs during the opening of the desk until the collar 13 engages a shoulder 12 on the rod when the supports are swung into the operative position. In a modification, a single central lamp support is hinged to the upper edge of the desk, or to a pair of vertical arms thereon, and is connected at each end by a link and lever to the collar 9, the levers being provided with elongated pivot holes to allow for longitudinal movement. The pivot for the stay is also slidable in slots. A lamp switch 26 may be mounted on the back of the desk and operated by a hinged link 28 on the slide, the link having a slot engaging the switch lever 27 to provide for lost motion.
