Abstract

743,658. Driving conveyer belts. MINING ENGINEERING CO., Ltd. Dec. 9, 1953 [Jan. 1, 1953], No. 95/53. Class 78 (1). An endless conveyer having separate loadcarrying and driven tension elements has its two elements separated at adjacent points on upper and lower runs between the ends of the conveyer, the two runs of the tension element at these points being connected in driving relationship by means permitting slip in the drive from one to the other. As shown applied to an endless belt 2 running on an incline and supported on cross-bars extended between a pair of cable driving chains 1, the chains at the adjacent points are led over pairs of sprockets 8, 9 and 10, 11 while the belt is supported in the gaps by idler rollers 7 and 12. Where the upper run is travelling up the incline sprockets 10 are driven and a sprocket connection 15 between the shafts of sprockets 8 and 11 allows the downwardly moving chains in the lower run downhill of the sprockets 8 to assist in driving the upper run, the lower run immediately uphill of the sprockets 8 hanging in a loop 14 sufficient to allow for variation in length of the chain links. Instead of providing the loop 14 in the downwardly moving run, the sprocket connection 15 may be replaced by gearing including a fluid coupling, or the motor driving sprockets 10 may be arranged to run as a generator or a motor, a similar motor driving or being driven by the sprockets 8, the two motors being electrically connected to a common supply so that on an incline one motor generates to feed extra power to the other. Specifications 729,943 and 737,583 are referred to.
