Abstract

743,596. Springs; hydraulic shock absorbers. ARMSTRONGS PATENTS CO., Ltd., [formerly ARMSTRONG'S PATENTS CO., Ltd.], and CHAMBERS H. D: Dec. 15, 1953 [March 17, 1953], No. 7268/53. Class 108 (3). An hydraulic shock absorber 7 includes two springs 12, 14, disposed in series, and locking means for temporarily uniting in a fixed relative position the two abutments 13, 16, of one of the springs 12, whereby both of the springs 12, 14 in series, or only the spring 14, unaffected by the locking means, may be compressed. In Fig. 1, the locking means comprises a split ring 6 which may slide freely on the cylindrical outer casing of the shock absorber 7. Alternatively by tightening a screw connecting the split ends of the ring 6 by means of a knurled wheel 10, the ring may be made to grip the shock absorber casing rigidly. The screw and wheel 10 may be replaced by a toggle mechanism. A projection (not shown), may be provided to locate the gap in the split ring 6 relative to the shock absorber casing, while permitting sliding movement of the ring. In Fig. 4 the ring 6 is dispensed with, but a dust cover 21 of the spring 12 is formed with castellations 21c. The flange 13 is formed with gaps 23a. When the cover 21 is turned so that the castallations 21c slide within the gaps 23a, the spring 12 is under load. When the cover 21 is turned so that the castlelations 21c rest on the remaining portions of the flange 13, the spring 12 is effectively by-passed by the cover 21. The rates of the springs 12, 14 are 400 and 130 1b./inch.
