Abstract

855,306. Joint-making packing. THERMOTECHNICAL DEVELOPMENT Ltd. Oct. 21, 1958 [Nov. 5, 1957], No. 34484/57. Class 122 (3.) [Also in Group XXVIII] The space between a duct 1 and a surrounding wall 2 is sealed by a metal annular diaphragm formed by sideways over-lapping leaf-springs fixed at one margin to the duct or wall, the other margin slidably contacting under spring pressure a seating face. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 1, segmental leaf-springs 3 in mutual overlapping relationship around the duct are secured to a support 4 on the duct and overlap and are spring-pressed against an abutment 5 on the wall. Additional spring-pressure is provided by a leaf-spring 6 fixed to duct and bearing on the springs 3. In a modification for a vertical duct, Fig. 2 (not shown), the springs 3 are fixed to the wall and overlap an abutment on the duct, pressure being applied to the springs intermediate the duct and the wall by a pivotallymounted weight. In Fig. 3, laminated springs 15 and 16 with layers of progressively less width are fixed at one end to supports 13 and 14 on the duct and wall respectively and arranged in overlapping contact on the opposed faces of the widest laminations. The springs are formed by mutually overlapping trapezoidal sections, as shown in Fig. 4.
